The Center for Positive Futures culminated its program towards promoting environmental responsibility among schoolchildren by conducting the 2nd Painting Messages for the Earth program. From rurban San Mateo and Montalban in the province of Rizal, this year’s environmental responsibility program was brought to the rural municipalities of Puerto Princesa in the island-province of Palawan and of Sta. Rosa in Nueva Ecija, north of Manila. The program was also held in the municipality of Pateros in the fringes of Metropolitan Manila.

Almost 2000 Grade 6 schoolchildren from the abovementioned municipalities participated in a classroom-level drawing contest that sought to portray how to preserve the environment and make our world a sustainable place to live in. Winners in the school-level contest joined in a municipality-level painting contest. Since the program involved three municipalities, three first-prize winners, three second-prize winners and three third-prize winners were chosen. The first-prize winners received a one-year full tuition fee scholarship to the Center for Positive Futures High School. The second-prize winners got a 50% scholarship while the third-prize winners got a 25% scholarship.

The program was participated in by the government’s Department of Education at the local level as well as by the principals and teachers of 25 participating public elementary schools covering the three municipalities. The initial activities started in October 2005 and the final programs ended in March 2006.

The Painting Messages for the Earth Program is only one of the environmental responsibilities programs that the Center for Positive Futures is engaged in. This program is implemented in conjunction with promoting the Charter for Human Responsibilities. One of the principles of the Charter states that the consumption of natural resources to meet human needs must be integrated in a larger effort of active protection and careful management of the environment.

We hope that through the Painting Messages for the Earth Program, we help raise environmental awareness and responsibility among the academic community, students and the community alike.
