2005: Difusing the Charter in the local languages of (...)

In spite of a slow and difficult beginning (new coordination and late budget), we have started to spread our activities following the axes stated before, that is:

1. Continuation of the translation process of the Charter into the important African languages (Pulaar, Mandinka, Haoussa etc.)

The process of translation has gone on, in particular with Pulaar (a language spoken in about twenty countries in Africa). At that level, we are confronted with a real work of homogenisation of the concepts, because this language includes several variants. A seminar organized in Dakar allowed to confront translators /linguists coming from four countries from the sub region (Mali, Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Guinea Conakry). If, on the notion of human responsibility, there is an agreement on the background, we still have to find a common concept being comprehensible for the linguistic variants. The translation process appears to be long and difficult, which influences the edition of the document.

2. Meeting of various socio-professional categories to discuss and enrich the Charter

We have worked with the Panafrican network of fishermen ADEPA (Association for the Development of Artisanal Fishing) that is present in about ten countries in Africa. We have benefitted from the opportunity offered by this organization which is committed in the conception of a "Code of conduct for a responsible fishing".
This seminar was an opportunity to make a parallel between this project to produce a code and the Charter of Human Responsibilities, which provides elements of proposals. Moreover, the Charter will be taken into account in its elaboration.

At the methodological level, the local Committee of the Charter of Human Responsibilities will involve efforts in the collection of experiments in the fishing sector. The purpose here is to find, from the fishermen life, experiments that take into account the responsibility dimension in the protection of the marine and river environment.
It is the beginning of a collaboration with an actor that is preoccupied in its sector by the question of responsibility.
