The Philippine process to the CONFINT

Last July 14, 2009, the Philippines launched the local campaign for the “Let’s Take Care of the Planet” International Conference to be held in Brazil on 2010. The Philippine National Organizing Committee of the said international conference, which includes the Charter of Human Responsibilities, Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), UNESCO Philippines, and the National Association of Secondary Schools of the Philippines (NASSPHIL), had chosen the annual Student Leaders’ Congress of NASSPHIL to be the venue of the said launch. It was a three day event from the 13th to the 15th of July, 2009, held in the Teacher’s Camp, Baguio City, Philippines. The said Congress consisted of youth leaders from the secondary school sector from all over the country.

The Philippine National Organizing Committee was given half a day for the launch, which was on the 14th of July. The program launch was attended by DepEd Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya as keynote speaker, DepEd Director in the Cordillera Administrative Region (where Baguio belongs) Josefina Tamondong, Mayor Artemio Galwan of La Trinidad, Benguet, NASSPHIL officials and 300 student leaders and teacher-advisers, DENR Youth Coordinator Maria Magnolia Danganan, Jane Aprille Luis of Y Acts! and officers of the Charter for Human Responsibilities.

After the abovementioned guests voiced out their support for the campaign, the youth leaders offered their art works, which echoed the campaign’s theme of “Our Earth, Our Responsibility: Youth Movement to Take Care of the Planet”. All the youth leaders then pledged to echo this educational environmental campaign to their schools.

The Philippine campaign across secondary schools nationwide will culminate in the holding of twelve Area Conferences in November 2009. These areas were chosen based on geographical and biodiversity in November 2009 and in a National Meeting on February 2010 to choose the delegates to the International Children and Youth Conference as well as make a Commitment of Responsibility to the Planet to be presented to the said international conference.
