Leadership Workshop participants

The Y Acts! Youth Festival 2008! was successfully held from May 7-11, 2008 at the mountain city of La Trinidad, Benguet Province, which is nestled in the Cordillera Mountain Range in Northern Philippines. It was attended by 150 young participants from different points of the Philippines, from Luzon to Mindanao, mostly from underprivileged sectors of the youth population. The number of participants topped the 79 participants during the 1st Youth Festival held in Taytay, Rizal last December 2006. Theme of this year’s festival is "Celebrating Initiatives undertaken by the Filipino Youth".

Plenary Presentation

The festival kicked off with 16 plenary presentations of organizational initiatives by organizational leaders. The presenters included: Center for Positive Futures-Banaba, Jesus First Christian Ministries, Youth Health Corps-Abot Kamay, Christian Foundation for Children and the Aging, Youth Advocates for a Better Chance, Piglas Kabataan, Tayo ang Tinig at Gabay, Center for Positive Futures-Montalban, Kabanata Sampu, FORGE, Highland Weaving of Manobo Women, ADAMAYAO, Davao City National High School, GITIB, Institute of Social Order, and KKK-Likok. These presenters talked on their initiatives on education, peace and rights, identity, gender and culture, and environmental sustainability.

Workshop Presentation in Role Play

After these presentations, workshops by young resource persons were held on Leadership, Arts, Indigenous Peoples, and Entrepreneurship. Resource persons include Renelyn Tan of the World Youth Alliance, Lisa Ilagan of the Damili Group of Artists and the University of the Philippines-Baguio, Jess Paul Pasibe of the Citizenship by Good Example. Art Workshop

The Art Group presented their four artworks depicting the four sub-themes of the Festival. The Indigenous Peoples group spearheaded a signing of a Covenant to uphold the rights and welfare of indigenous peoples. The Leadership Group and Entrepreneurship Group presented a short play.

City Parade

The final day, the workshop groups presented their output, an organizational meeting was held wherein a Steering Committee among the youth leaders were chosen to organize the next Youth Festival in 2010, then a moving Closing Ritual was held. In the afternoon, there was a parade held in Baguio City, followed by a City Tour organized for participants from other provinces of the Philippines, and finally the Festival was capped with a concert participated in by local artists and artists among the participants.

Closing Ceremony

The Festival was held in coordination with the City Government of La Trinidad represented by Mayor Artemio A. Galwan, the Benguet State University represented by President Rogelio Colting, and the youth councils of Baguio City and La Trinidad.
