Difficult conditions in Lebanon in 2007

The political and economic conditions deteriorated in Lebanon in 2007, and the security situation became very fragile with explosions in Beirut and Mount Lebanon, assassinations (in Beirut) and a 3 months’ war in the northern part of the country between a terrorist group based in a Palestinian refugees camp and the Lebanese army.

Of course, in such an atmosphere, it was difficult to work and to organise important events.

The approach used was to support independent initiatives aiming at defending values related to the theme of responsibility, under the following guidelines:

  1. Writing and getting engaged in events against a civil war in Lebanon
  2. Struggling for the construction of a modern and secular state in Lebanon.

Two initiatives falling under these guidelines are:

  1. A 30 seconds TV clip to be broadcasted in local and national TV stations sending an anti war message.
  2. A monthly newsletter (12 pages) in which intellectuals, academics and students publish articles and reportages on issues related to the edification of the state, to reforms, to secularism, to social and political peace, to public and private freedoms, and to the rule of law, etc.

In addition, the translation, the editing and the printing of the charter after the modifications on its first version are in progress, while the distribution of the pamphlets with the old version was interrupted. Few hundred copies remain, as thousands were already put in social centers, dispensaries and secondary schools for people to take and read freely.
