Ziad MAJED

Lebanon, Middle East

My name is Ziad Majed. I am from south Lebanon and I live in Beirut. I completed a B.A. in economics and an M.A. in Arabic literature at the American University of Beirut, a DEUG (two-year university diploma) in sociology at the Lebanese University, and a DEA (Master 2) completed with a doctoral studies in political sciences at Sciences Po Paris.

After working in a Political Research Center in Beirut on electoral systems and political parties, I co-authored the first UNDP human development report on post war Lebanon, and then moved to Stockholm, Sweden, in 1999, where I worked for 2 years at an international research institute IDEA a program officer for the Arab World.

In the last 10 years, I have been working in journalism and research in Lebanon and with international organizations, and I have coordinated projects analyzing the electoral systems, the living conditions of women and the civil society dynamics in Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan and Lebanon. I have also contributed to analyses and meetings on issues related to the political Islam.

More recently, I have been teaching Middle Eastern Studies at the American University of Paris.

I have written a book on the Beirut Spring of 2005, and a booklet on the left in Lebanon.

Since 2001, I have been involved in activities with the Alliance for a Responsible, Plural and United World and in the Future of the Planet program.
