Currently our society faces many problems. These exist because people, families, societal institutions, businesses, schools, etc are not taking personal or full responsibility for the things that they do and how they live their lives. The Charter can serve as a catalyst to challenge all peoples and associations to consider what it would mean to act responsibly and to make a full and serious commitment to doing so.

The country we live in and will be responsible for, the United States, causes many of the global problems that we all face. We use more energy both per capita and overall than any other country on the planet. Our environmental footprint is also greater than any other; and humanity as a whole is rapidly depleting our natural resource base.

Similarly the United States spends about as much money on the military as the rest of the world combined. More than $450 billion out of $900 billion total. The United States has attacked more countries than any other; has more weapons of mass destruction; and has used them more often than any other country. In addition the United States has blocked, tried to weaken, or refused to ratify more international treaties and conventions than any other country.

Likewise the US is the biggest debtor of any country in the world. The people in the United States are living well beyond their means. Similarly the monetary exchange rate and interest rates are set so as to be most unfavorable to those upon whom we depend, or prey upon, to fulfill our pleasures. It is thus imperative that the people in the US correct this situation by taking responsibility for our own lives, ensure that our government acts responsibly, and work through our institutions and businesses to ensure that they do too.

We need to plan to make a shift as individuals, families, communities, and a country to full sustainability; to create a world at peace not war; to correct the balance of payments and debt problems; to work cooperatively with the rest of the world to solve our global problems; and to work for equity and ensure that all peoples have the opportunity to fulfill their basic human needs.
