A Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq

The unpopularity across the US of the war in Iraq is well documented. Yet the efforts of individuals and groups in the US and elsewhere to end the war are having no apparent impact on US policy: as Christopher Hayes wrote in the April 14, 2008 issue of The Nation:

In the run-up to the war, organizers managed to pull together the largest simultaneous worldwide demonstrations in history. That didn’t work. Then the antiwar movement channeled much of its energy into electoral politics, helping to elect Democratic majorities in both houses. That hasn’t worked either.

It is in this context that a group of Democratic Congressional candidates, retired military officers and national security officers have released A Responsible Plan to End the War.

The 36-page Plan is part of a campaign to mobilize citizens to endorse the plan and exert public pressure on our current elected officials to move in the right direction even before a new Administration takes office in 2009.

The plan addresses Using U.S. diplomatic power, Addressing humanitarian concerns, Restoring our Constitution, Restoring our military, Restoring independence to the media, and Creating a new, U.S.-centered energy policy.
